Spokane Christian Church Internship Moving Forward

Tim DeWolf / Ministry Intern (2010)

I used to work at Helly Hansen twenty-five hours a week while going to school full time at EWU. My philosophy and my joy was to give to God the time that I was able to give to serve others through bible studies, leading, organizing and planning. God has continued to move in my life in amazing ways that leave me in awe. Through the years I have been humbled to be given the call to lead a small group, help shepherd the campus ministry and to now be serving on staff as an intern. None of this is to my credit but God asking me to go in his strength (1Peter 4:11).

My eyes have been opened to see what the Peacock’s do to lead the church here in Spokane. It has been such a joy and opportunity for Heidi and I to be able to help serve alongside the Peacocks. I helped lead the Spread the Word campaign, logistically finding out how we can accomplish the goal, printing maps, emailing small group leaders, and communicating the plan to the church and asking God through prayer to bless the effort to reach a community in need. I was able to help Jen Quaschnick with the Harvest Party on October 31st. I was responsible to make sure all the volunteers knew where they were going. I’ve since learned the ways to send emails to large groups, and how to manage 50 responses and personal requests. One of my favorite parts of the internship is Staff Meetings. The four of us are building such a strong friendship and partnership in the gospel.

Heidi and I with the Peacocks share challenges, identify needs, spur one another on with stories and are challenging one another higher. I am lucky enough to hear lessons on leadership, serving, and other great topics strengthening our faith, lead by Jermaine each Tuesday morning. We went through Simple Church by Thom Rainer in November to help plan the 2009 packet that was passed out at the end of the year banquet. “Love God, Care for People, Grow in Christ, Change the World” kicked off in January 2009 as our mission to Love People. Jermaine had me design a logo for each. We even got shirts to all the members this last month with those logos on the back.

We went through several lessons on leadership as well that I am grateful for. We also are working diligently to prepare for the Northwest Youth Camp and Northwest Campus Ministry Retreat held in Medical Lake. We went to the camp to meet the camp director to talk logistics for the upcoming campus retreat in the spring. I am fired up! With all the early planning, I see both being a huge success and encouragement to unite the northwest churches together! The experience and training the Peacocks are giving us is priceless. There has been many times where I have received insight from their leadership that has really inspired me.

Each month our internship has had a different focus. Last month for example I was to prepare to preach God’s Word on Sunday. We spent a few Staff meetings at the building getting me trained to speak Gods Word, as God would want me to speak. I struggled at times getting myself to feel confident (2 Timothy 2:15). This month I am charged with sharing my faith at the colleges in Spokane. I really do want to see God do amazing things this year, and am excited to be able to focus on evangelism this month. Truthfully I have had to wrestle with going out on my own, sharing throughout the campus. I have pushed myself to really reach out everyday, sharing my faith, setting up appointments, desperate to find people who are seeking to build a relationship with God who are ready give it all of their heart. I ask for your prayers this month, as I really strive to be used by God to help campus students get connected with God. It is through your faith that we even have this opportunity.

I think about the Special Contribution last year and the miracle of it. The sacrifice people gave last year was mountain moving kind of faith! I am grateful for the sacrifice of the Spokane Christian Church for the heart to allow Heidi and I to be interns here in Spokane. I look forward to serving with you side by side to be the light atop the hill (Matthew 5:14).

Internship Experience

Heidi Townsend / Ministry Intern (2010)

Over the past several months Tim and I have had the opportunity to serve as ministry interns for the Spokane Christian Church. During this time there have been a multitude of responsibilities, tasks, and opportunities to serve.

One of the largest events of the year, for our church, was our annual banquet. In the preparation stages of this event I had the opportunity help with the planning of specific details, I was responsible for the registration process, as well as served during the event with various needed tasks. Tim and I also helped to plan, organize, facilitate and participated in the “Spread the Word” campaign, where we organized a way for every small group to reach out to the entire Hillyard neighborhood, one of the neediest areas in Spokane.

In October we hosted the Harvest Fest for the Wishing Star Foundation at the church, which was a great neighborhood success. Both Tim and I helped to organize the workers for this event; we canvassed the surrounding neighborhood along with our small groups, and worked the different displays during the event. I have also been able to start some preliminary planning of for our annual Northwest Campus Retreat by securing a location and helping to inform other campus ministries.

Along with helping out with larger church events, this internship opportunity has also opened the door for me to be able to spend time with different members within the church from every ministry. I have been able to participate in youth events and YPT meetings, as well as get one to one times with the youth, singles, campus and married women within the church. We have also organized and provided child care for families who participating in the married midweek classes.

Planning and organizing campus events is also a role the Tim and I take on as interns for the church. This experience provides time where we can make more concerted efforts to share our faith on the different campuses in the area. I have been able to study the bible with several women and prayerfully many more. There have also been many efforts made to help strengthen and grow our campus ministry as a whole.

So far, there have been many opportunities to serve the church through this internship experience, and I look forward seeing God move in a powerful way as we continue to pray and act according to his will.
